Playwright, Journalist, and Activist, Mrs. Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu.

Today, July 13, admirers are raising a toast to one of Nigeria’s dynamic daughters, Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu, the journalist, activist, playwright, and cultural crusader whose name rings through newsrooms, theatre halls, and advocacy corridors like a resounding gong of purpose.

As she turns 65, her story reads like a stage play scripted by the gods, rich with conflict, courage, and a cascade of triumphs.

Born on the same date as Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, Dupe shares more than a birthday with the literary giant. She hails, like him, from the ancient city of Ake in Abeokuta, where words and resistance are passed down like family heirlooms. And like Soyinka, she has stood toe-to-toe with injustice, wielding her pen like a sword and her voice like thunder.

Queen of Many Crowns

From NAWOJ Chair in Lagos to Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) leader, Dupe has worn leadership like a second skin. During her six-year tenure at NAWOJ, she ignited one of the most impactful maternal health advocacy campaigns Nigeria has seen. Her “Save the Mothers” movement — complete with bold protests, open letters, and relentless lobbying, led to Governor Babatunde Fashola extending maternity leave from three to six months, and introducing a 10-day paternity leave policy in Lagos.

Behind this reform was Dupe – the quiet storm, the strategist who understood that to change the story, you must first own the script.

The Playwright and Performer

Dupe’s creative journey began early, writing and staging plays like Moriyina, which aired on NTA Ibadan in 1985. Her literary arsenal includes titles such as Drama of Fate, Destiny Child, and The Great Outing. When she wasn’t writing scripts, she was living them, acting alongside theatre legends like Baba Sala and Ogungbe, weaving stories that reflected the soul of a nation.

And then she sang, literally. In 2005, she released an album titled Lagode Kuramo, proving that the Lioness of Ake was not bound to one medium. Her voice, rich and resonant, joined her pen in the pursuit of cultural preservation.

Journalism as Justice

At The Nation Newspaper and as a chapel chair in the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Dupe did not just report the news, she confronted power. Once, she helped uncover a corruption scandal that rattled her union to its core and ended with EFCC investigations and recovered funds. For her efforts, she was threatened , in Nigeria and even abroad. But Dupe never flinched.

When asked what kept her going, she once said, “We are the conscience of the society. If we are silent, we are complicit.”

A Legacy that Lives Loud

Her work took her to Goldsmiths University in London and CUNY in New York, where she helped organize digital journalism training for over 100 women. As Chair of NAWOJ, she created Positive Thinkers, a magazine that evolved into a digital platform promoting women’s voices across Nigeria. She has been honored as a Girl-Child Ambassador by Mercy Corps and continues to mentor a new generation of journalists.

Today, she stands tall — a mother, a mentor, a maker of change.

A Birthday Among Giants

It’s no coincidence that Dupe shares a birthday with Wole Soyinka, Harrison Ford, Patrick Stewart, and Bayo Arogundade. The day seems to belong to storytellers and warriors — people who shape narratives and challenge norms.

And Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu, at 65, remains all of that and more.
