The Transformative Governance Forum (TGF) has paid glowing tribute to one of Nigeria’s most revered political elders, Alhaji Salihu Abubakar Tanko Yakasai, OFR, describing him as a “national treasure and a living embodiment of progressive governance,” as he marks his 100th birthday.
In a statement issued today, the Director of Strategic Engagements & Partnerships of the Forum, Ademola Rabiu (CEng), said the centenarian’s life represented an unbroken chain of activism, courage, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
TGF hailed Yakasai as a custodian of the ideological heritage of the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), the radical, people-centred political movement co-founded by the legendary Malam Aminu Kano. As a founding member, Yakasai was celebrated for standing against entrenched feudal structures and for championing a political philosophy rooted in equity, social justice, democratic socialism, and the upliftment of the Talakawa (common people).
“Today we honour not just a man, but a legacy,” the Forum stated. “Alhaji Salihu Abubakar Tanko Yakasai is part of the living continuum of NEPU’s defiant spirit, a relentless advocate of the people’s welfare whose voice continues to echo the principles of Malam Aminu Kano.”
The statement described Yakasai’s lifelong commitment to welfare progressivism as both ideological and generational, noting that his consistent calls for accountable governance, inclusion, and social justice have shaped Nigeria’s democratic discourse for decades.
“As a recipient of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), Alhaji Yakasai’s contributions have been formally recognized by a nation he has steadfastly sought to improve,” the Forum added.
TGF prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the iconic elder statesman more years in good health and peace, saying his century-long life “is a testament to the enduring fight for a just and equitable Nigeria.”
“Happy 100th Birthday to a true progressive,” the Forum wrote. “Your voice, courage, and convictions remain an inspiration to generations.”
