In a chilling pre-dawn assault on Monday, terrorists launched a deadly offensive on troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion under Operation HADIN KAI in Kukawa, Borno State.
The Nigerian Army, in a post on its official X handle, detailed the attack, which involved gun trucks, motorcycles, and a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED).
The terrorists attempted to breach the base from the Gudumbali axis, but the soldiers mounted a fierce defence, supported by airstrikes and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
The Army’s counteroffensive forced the attackers into a chaotic retreat, resulting in the neutralisation of 12 terrorists and the capture of a significant cache of weapons, including five AK-47 rifles, anti-aircraft guns, RPG equipment, and 40 motorcycles.
However, the Army confirmed the loss of three soldiers in the encounter. “Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the post read.
House-to-house searches and clearance operations are ongoing to secure the area.
The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, praised the troops for their bravery and urged them to sustain their efforts in combating terrorism in the Northeast.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating insurgency and restoring stability in the region.
