Suspected terrorists have abducted the newly elected vice chairman of Biu Local Government Area in Borno State, Alhaji Saidu, alongside two councillors and several other passengers.
The councillors, who represent Zarawuyaku and Miringa wards, were reportedly seized on Wednesday evening along the Kamuya village–Buni Yadi road while travelling in a Hisbah vehicle.
Sources said the victims were returning from Potiskum in Yobe State to Biu when the attack occurred.
The incident happened barely days after the officials emerged victorious in last Saturday’s local government elections.
According to a source who requested anonymity, one of the abducted councillors is the immediate past vice chairman of Biu Local Government Area.
“Yes, our newly elected vice chairman, Alhaji Saidu, and two councillors from Zarawuyaku and Miringa wards were abducted by suspected Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists,” the source said.
“They were travelling from Potiskum to Biu in a Hisbah vehicle when they were intercepted along the Kamuya village–Buni Yadi road. Other unidentified passengers were also taken.”
The source appealed to the Borno State Government and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts to secure the release of the abducted officials and other captives.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the police or the state government regarding the incident.
