Terror in Ekiti as Suspected Kidnappers Rain Bullets on Couple’s Car

A couple told NewsmakersNG today how they narrowly escaped death when their car was waylaid by suspected kidnappers along Omuo-Ekiti/Ode-Ekiti/Ado-Ekiti Road, at about 5:30 pm on July 28, 2021.

Olajumoke Johnson was driving with her husband, Oladimeji, by her side when they had the encounter as they were coming from Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).

She said, “A wave of bandits came out of the bush as I negotiated a corner. They started shooting at us. The confidence I had on that day came from God. I was able to continue driving through the gunshots with speed because there was no going back.

“Another wave of bandits appeared ahead and surged towards us. They started firing again. We did not know how God protected us from the bullets.

“We were able to move the car for several miles until it couldn’t hold it anymore. Two tyres gave way with a burst and the car somersaulted, but God saved us again. We had on our seat belts and did not sustain any scratch.

“God provided an Okada (motorbike) rider who carried us away from the point of the accident to our town (Omuo-Ekiti).

Mr Johnson also shared his experience with NewsmakersNG. He said, “We were travelling from Ado-Ekiti to Omuo-Ekiti via the new Ode/Agbado Ekiti Road on Wednesday 28th July 2021 when we were suddenly attacked by the bandits, suspected to be kidnappers.

“The incident happened around 5.30 pm. About 3 Kilometres after Isinbode-Ekiti, on our way to Omuo-Ekiti. The suspected kidnappers brandishing several guns stood at both sides of the road and started shooting sporadically from both sides at our Highlander SUV. Bullets entered severally into the vehicle, tyre, and engine.

“As we sped away from the bandits behind us, other members of the gang emerged ahead of us shattering the front view of the car with bullets.

“It was a miracle that we drove through, past the location, to about a kilometre away before two of our tyres, which must have harboured several bullets, burst while on speed. The vehicle somersaulted several times before being stopped by a culvert at River Orisa Bridge, close to Omuo-Ekiti.

“After wriggling out of the heavily damaged vehicle, we were luckily rescued by an oncoming motorbike (Okada) rider that took us to Omuo-Ekiti. The incident was reported at Omuo-Ekiti Divisional Police station on 28th July 2021.”
