Onitsha Main Market erupted in chaos following a violent confrontation between traders and operatives of the ‘Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra’ (Ocha Brigade).
According to multiple eyewitnesses, the clash occurred today along Bright Street, opposite First Bank.
The task force reportedly arrived intending to seize traders’ goods for operating illegally in the market.
When traders resisted, the situation escalated, prompting the operatives to allegedly open fire on unarmed civilians.
At least four people were reportedly shot, including a pregnant woman, triggering widespread panic and causing shops to evacuate as security forces struggled to restore calm.
The incident highlights growing concerns over the conduct of Ocha Brigade in commercial districts.
