The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite withdrawal of services from Monday, June 1, 2026, in response to the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils.

In a directive issued by the union’s leadership, the NUT said the industrial action would remain in force until further notice, stressing that it was taken after repeated concerns over the safety and welfare of education workers and learners in the state.

The union stated that the prolonged detention of the victims has heightened fear among teachers, disrupted learning activities, and discouraged many parents from sending their children to school.

It added that the situation has also increased tension in affected communities, with growing anxiety over the safety of school environments.

According to the NUT, the strike is intended to pressure relevant authorities to intensify ongoing security and rescue efforts to ensure the safe release of those abducted.

It urged members to comply fully with the directive, remain calm, and prioritise personal safety while staying at home during the period of industrial action.

The union reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, stating that it would continue engagements with government authorities and security agencies until the victims are safely reunited with their loved ones.

The NUT further reiterated its commitment to the protection of educational personnel and learners across Nigeria, describing safety in schools as a non-negotiable priority for the education sector.
