Taraba Speaker Resigns

Malik Yahya/

Speaker of the Taraba state house of assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Diah, resigned on yesterday.

Diah, who represents Mbamga constituency, told journalists in Jalingo, the state capital, that he resigned for personal reasons.

He was elected 8th speaker of the assembly in June 2015 and was re-elected speaker in April 2016 after an appeal court sitting in Yola, Adamawa state, ordered a rerun election in his constituency.

There are reports that Diah, who is the longest-serving legislator in the assembly, stepped down to avoid being replaced.

Mohammed Gwampo, member representing Yorro constituency, is said to have anchored the collation of signatures of his colleagues for removing the speaker.

Diah and Darius Ishaku, the governor, are not in good terms but Ishaku has denied being involved in the plot to oust the speaker.
