Tanker Fire Kills Many in Calabar

Many people were feared killed in a petrol tanker explosion along the Calabar-Odukpani Highway, Cross River State today.

The incident occurred at a bend close to the Odukpani local government secretariat.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the petrol tanker overturned while trying to negotiate the bend.

Residents and eyewitnesses immediately rushed to the scene to scoop petrol.

Their action reportedly resulted into a spark as some of them used metal containers to scoop the fuel, leading to an explosion which consumed several people.

The scene was littered with charred remains of the victims.

Relevant authorities are yet to confirm the casualty figure.
