A major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape unfolded today as former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), formally ending decades of association with the opposition platform.
Tambuwal disclosed the decision in a statement shared on his official X account, revealing that he had already communicated his resignation in writing to his ward chairman after what he described as “deep reflection and consultations.”
The seasoned politician said the PDP had played a defining role in his political career but acknowledged that persistent internal divisions within the party made it difficult for him to remain.
“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful for the opportunities it gave me to serve our nation,” he said, recalling his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State during his second term in office.
However, Tambuwal said the prolonged leadership tussles and factional disagreements within the party had eroded its cohesion and strategic direction.
“Persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party,” he stated.
According to him, the situation had weakened the unity that once defined the opposition party, prompting him to take what he described as a necessary political step.
In the same announcement, Tambuwal confirmed that he had joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside his political associates and supporters.
He said the move was driven by his conviction that Nigeria requires a stronger political platform capable of promoting integrity, accountability and inclusive governance.
“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he said.
Tambuwal also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values and national service, stressing that his political future would remain guided by the ideals of justice, democracy and unity.
The defection marks another significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political alignments ahead of the next election cycle, as parties reposition and influential figures explore new platforms amid ongoing turbulence within major political blocs.
