The suspended Olorile of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) facility in Ilaro after failing to meet bail conditions set by the Ifo Magistrate Court.

The court had granted him bail with two sureties, each required to provide N5 million and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

NCS spokesperson, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed the development, stating that Oba Ogunjobi would be released upon fulfilling the bail conditions.

Oba Ogunjobi’s legal troubles began after a viral video surfaced, showing him verbally and physically assaulting 73-year-old Chief Areola Abraham.

In the video, the monarch is seen cursing and threatening the elderly man, accusing him of conspiracy. The incident led to widespread public outrage and condemnation.

In response to the incident, the Ogun State Government suspended Oba Ogunjobi for six months, citing conduct unbecoming of a traditional ruler. The suspension was implemented in collaboration with the Egba Traditional Council, in accordance with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021.

Following his suspension, the Ogun State Police Command arraigned Oba Ogunjobi before the Ifo Magistrate Court on charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The court granted him bail under the specified conditions, which he has yet to meet, resulting in his remand at the Ilaro correctional facility.

The police have also initiated a manhunt for the monarch’s accomplices involved in the assault.

The case has been adjourned to March 6, 2025, for further hearing.
