Residents of Awotan community along the Apete-Akufo Road in Ibadan, Oyo State, were thrown into panic on Tuesday evening after suspected cult members shot dead a 27-year-old man, identified as Ukpene Michael, and severed his right wrist in what police believe was a reprisal attack.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to belong to the Black Axe confraternity, arrived in a Lexus SUV around 5pm and attacked the victim in front of a bottling company depot where he worked as a motor boy.
Michael was reportedly having a conversation with colleagues when he received a phone call and stepped outside the premises.
One of the suspects, pretending to be on a call, confronted him, snatched his phone, and shot him at close range.
Another attacker then used an axe to cut off his wrist before they fled the scene at high speed, brandishing their weapon through the car window.
Reports indicate the killing was likely a retaliation for the recent murder of a Black Axe member allegedly by rival Eiye confraternity members at Monatan area of the city.
The gruesome attack caused chaos in the area as residents and commercial motorcyclists fled for safety.
Police officers from Apete Division later arrived to evacuate the body, while operatives from the Anti-Cultism unit inspected the crime scene.
The Oyo State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident, saying investigations were ongoing and the body had been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary.
