Tension erupted in the Ipele community late on Wednesday evening as suspected bandits on motorcycles launched a deadly assault on the Ipele Divisional Police Headquarters.
The attack, reported at approximately 9.45pm, saw explosives believed to be dynamite used to damage the station before the assailants fled the scene ahead of arriving reinforcements.
Early reports indicate no casualties among security personnel or residents so far.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the armed men, riding in a group, struck without warning and created panic in the community, forcing residents to flee their homes and seek refuge in nearby bushes.
The sound of gunfire and explosions triggered fear among families preparing for New Year services, with many describing the incident as a coordinated terrorist-style assault.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and has condemned the attack in the strongest terms.
In an official statement, the Police said the command has deployed tactical teams, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Police Mobile Force units, to the area to contain the situation and restore order.
Police leadership assured the public that a manhunt for the perpetrators is underway and urged calm as investigations continue.
This latest act of violence compounds ongoing security challenges in Ondo State, where gunmen have recently targeted law enforcement and civilians alike.
In December, armed assailants opened fire on police officers at a checkpoint in the same area, injuring two officers and a female civilian. One suspect was arrested and is assisting authorities with their investigation.
Residents have expressed frustration over what they perceive as an inadequate response from security agencies, particularly given previous attacks in the area.
The situation remains fluid as reinforcements continue to move into Ipele to secure the community and prevent further violence.
Authorities have stressed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Ondo State and have called on locals to cooperate with security forces while providing any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
