Players, coaching staff and officials of Nigeria’s Super Eagles boycotted their scheduled afternoon training in Rabat, Morocco on Tuesday, citing unpaid allowances and match bonuses ahead of the 2026 World Cup play-off.
The squad are due to meet Gabon in the first play-off tie on Thursday, in Rabat, as part of the four-team CAF play-offs for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigerian journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji, reporting on the situation, said none of the players had received their allocated allowances or bonuses for reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and for the World Cup play-off campaign.
Reports say the backlog relates to roughly 30 matches, a grievance players say stretches back over about three years.
The complaint follows a series of recent reports that members of the Super Eagles have gone unpaid for extended periods.
Senior players have in recent weeks said the side went without match bonuses for as long as two to three years, a criticism that has hung over preparations for the Rabat camp.
At the time of publication, the Nigeria Football Federation had not issued a response to the reports that training was suspended or to the specific claims about the unpaid bonuses.
This development raises fresh questions about preparations and morale ahead of a high-stakes fixture that could decide Nigeria’s immediate World Cup hopes.
