In a grand celebration of literary giant Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday, the much-anticipated feature film, “The Man Died,” will hold a special premiere screening on July 12 in Lagos.
This exclusive, invitation-only event marks the beginning of a global tribute to Africa’s first Nobel laureate, who turns 90 on July 13.
Inspired by Soyinka’s poignant “Prison Notes,” “The Man Died” is a compelling adaptation directed by the acclaimed Awam Amkpa and produced by renowned storyteller Femi Odugbemi under Zuri 24 Media. This 110-minute feature, shot entirely in Nigeria, brings to life Soyinka’s harrowing 22 months in solitary confinement during the Nigerian Civil War.
The premiere will be graced by a host of eminent personalities, diplomats, industry stakeholders, and Soyinka’s close friends and family. The organizers emphasize that this event is a special screening in honor of Soyinka’s milestone birthday, with a formal premiere to be scheduled later.
“The Man Died” promises to be a powerful narrative of resistance and courage, featuring an all-star Nigerian cast, including Wale Ojo as Soyinka, Sam Dede as his tormentor Yisa, and Hollywood rising star Abraham Amkpa. The film’s commitment to authenticity is reflected in its entirely local production crew, capturing the essence of Nigeria’s cultural and political landscape.
Producer Femi Odugbemi hopes the film will resonate with younger generations, inspiring them to engage with Nigeria’s political history and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom. Following its Lagos debut, the film will continue its journey with a screening at The Africa Centre in London on July 25, before touring film festivals worldwide and hitting public cinemas.
This landmark event is supported by the Lagos State Government, Providus Bank, and various distinguished patrons, with media coverage by Arise TV and Afia TV. As the world celebrates Soyinka’s enduring legacy, “The Man Died” stands as a testament to his indomitable spirit and profound impact on global culture.
