The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Abubakar Adamu, has asserted that sporting activities are a veritable means of crime-fighting.

Adamu spoke in Abuja during the unveiling of 2020 Police Games Logo and Mascot display at the Police Headquarters yesterday.

The Police boss said with the mental and physical alertness provided by sporting activities, security operatives would be able to discharge their duties optimally.

He said it would enhance camaraderie among the police officers and other security agencies nationwide, thereby helping in fighting crime better.

Adamu also said the program would provide a platform for the discovery of sporting talents like ACP Chioma Ajunwa, late Sunday Bada and the likes.

He added: “It is in cognizance of these that the Police Games have evolved over the years to become an integral part of the rich history and proud tradition of the Nigeria Police.

“In this regard, the 12th Nigeria Police Biennial Games will feature over 20 events, which are expected to present a great spectacle for the relaxation and enjoyment of all our guests. I, therefore, seize this opportunity to invite all and sundry to Anambra State to enjoy the Games with us.”

Adamu also solicited the support of the media and all other stakeholders in the sports industry.

Speaking at the event, Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano promised the state’s readiness in hosting the Games.

Obiano said apart from the main sporting event, participants would be made to visit all the historic places in the state.

Earlier in his welcome address, chairman of the sports committee, AIG Usman Alkali said close to 3000 Police athletes from the 12 Zonal Police Commands and the Force Headquarters would be competing for laurels at the Games which is slated for 29th February to 7th March 2020.

Alkali noted that the authorities have put in place everything needed to make the standard of the competitions internationally acceptable.

To this end, he said the Police is collaborating with the various sports associations through the sports ministry to provide graded referees and other officials for the Games.

He further expressed optimism that the Games will turn out to be the best so far organized by the Nigeria Police.
