State authorities have confirmed one person dead in an accident linked to excessive speeding during a downpour today on Third Mainland Bridge, in Lagos.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the collision, involving a Mini Truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD), occurred near the UNILAG waterfront as vehicles headed towards the Iyana-Oworonsoki area.

Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), reported that preliminary investigations indicated the accident was caused by excessive speeding during a morning downpour.

Despite ongoing government campaigns promoting road safety and adherence to speed limits, such incidents continue to occur, highlighting the persistent challenge of ensuring compliance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, confirmed that three other individuals were rescued from the scene. He praised the swift response of LASTMA officials who managed the situation efficiently, removing the vehicles and facilitating the flow of traffic.

Giwa expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits, especially during adverse weather conditions. He emphasized the critical need for both commercial and private drivers to prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies on Lagos roads.
