A soldier was shot dead on Monday afternoon after an unidentified man seized his service rifle at a military checkpoint around Ajose Adeogun road in Lagos.
The circumstances surrounding how the attacker overpowered the soldier remain unclear, and security agencies have yet to release an official account of the incident.
According to early reports shared on X and later summarised by news platforms, the assailant approached the checkpoint before managing to wrest the AK-47 rifle from the soldier. He then reportedly fired at the soldier at close range.
Eyewitnesses said the victim appeared conscious immediately after the shooting, though he collapsed soon after.
Video clips circulated online show bystanders filming the scene rather than attempting to assist the wounded soldier.
No confirmed details have emerged regarding the attacker’s identity, motive, or what happened to him after the shooting.
While some social media posts claimed the assailant may have exhibited signs of mental instability, there is currently no verified evidence to support that description.
The Nigerian Army and Lagos State authorities have not issued statements on whether the attacker was apprehended, neutralised, or escaped.
It also remains unconfirmed how many personnel were manning the checkpoint at the time and whether any operational lapses occurred.
As of press time, the Nigerian Army’s Directorate of Public Relations has not provided an official briefing.
