Vice President Touches Down at 11:22 a.m. to Assess Situation Following Attack That Killed Three Security Personnel

Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, today arrived at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, following the deadly security breach that left two soldiers and a police officer dead.

NewsmakersNG exclusively gathered that the Vice President’s aircraft touched down at about 11:22 a.m. as part of an emergency visit aimed at assessing the security situation and reassuring participants, staff and residents of the institute after the attack.

The visit comes barely 72 hours after suspected gunmen attacked the nation’s foremost policy and leadership training institution in Kuru, near Jos, triggering concerns over the security of strategic national assets.

The attackers on Monday night attempted to gain access to the residential quarters occupied by participants of the institute’s Senior Executive Course.
Security personnel, however, successfully repelled the assailants, preventing them from reaching the participants’ accommodation and foiling what sources described as a possible abduction attempt.

Two soldiers and a police officer attached to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police were killed during the attack.

No participant of the institute was abducted.

The joint visit by Vice President Shettima and Governor Mutfwang is seen as a strong demonstration of both federal and state governments’ commitment to securing critical national institutions and supporting security agencies in the fight against violent crime.

The Vice President is expected to receive security briefings, inspect affected areas and interact with participants and management of the institute.

Security has since been reinforced around the facility, while investigations and manhunt operations continue to track down those responsible for the attack.

NIPSS remains Nigeria’s premier policy think tank, providing strategic leadership and policy training for senior military officers, top civil servants, political office holders and private sector leaders from across the country.
