Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) has reaffirmed its leadership in oil and gas technology as four of its engineers emerged winners of the coveted 1st Place Technical Paper Award at the annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), which ended last night in Lagos.
Well engineers Augustine Okosun, Osehojie Ojeh-Oziegbe, Oluwatobilola Aribike, and Oladokun Adubi were honoured for an “outstanding display of in-depth technical knowledge and quality delivery” in their presentation titled: “Application of Perforated, Wash and Cement (PWC) Technology for Annular Remediation in Deepwater Well Abandonment.”
The award-winning paper showcases how PWC technology, a globally established, efficient, and cost-effective solution for annular remediation, was deployed for the first time in deepwater Nigeria during the Bonga Field Midlife Plug and Abandonment Campaign in the second quarter of last year.
Annular remediation, which involves repairing the space between a well’s casing and wellbore, is critical to installing a permanent isolation barrier during well abandonment, ensuring zonal isolation, preventing fluid migration, and averting potential environmental hazards.
According to SNEPCo, the PWC method not only delivered operational safety but also resulted in significant cost and time savings compared to conventional abandonment techniques, underscoring its value in achieving top quartile performance and operational excellence in the Bonga field.
Commenting on the recognition, lead presenter Augustine Okosun said: “Technology is a key aspect of the culture of excellence in our operations, and we hope the insights we shared will inspire a culture of cost-effective and environmentally sound practices—critical for operators to remain competitive.”
The SPE Best Technical Paper Award is regarded as one of the highest professional honours in petroleum engineering, celebrating innovation, technical depth, and industry impact.
