Dismissed lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Prof. Richard Akindele, has been released from jail after serving a two-year term.
Akindele was released on March 19, TheCable reports.
A Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, sentenced Akindele to prison in 2018 after he pleaded guilty to a four-count charge filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
He was accused of “attempting to have sex” with Monica Osagie, one of his postgraduate students, in exchange for marks.
In an audio which went viral online, Akindele was heard demanding five rounds of sex from Osagie to award her a pass mark in a course she failed.
The triay judge, Justice Maurine Onyetenu, held that it was necessary to punish Akindele to serve as a deterrent to other lecturers.
Akindele is a minister in the Anglican Church and was a member of the Diocese of Ife marriage committee before the scandal.
His appeal against his conviction is reportedly scheduled for hearing at the Court of Appeal, in Akure, on May 19.
