Several people at Joint Base Andrews, a United States military installation in Maryland just outside Washington, D.C., fell ill on Thursday after opening a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder, according to media reports.
A spokesperson for the base stated that a building and a connecting facility were evacuated as a precaution.
A cordon was set up around the area following the opening of the package by an individual inside the building.
Multiple people were transported to the on-base Malcolm Grove Medical Center after the incident.
The exact number of those affected and the severity of their conditions have not been disclosed.
An initial field test by the HAZMAT team reportedly did not detect any immediately hazardous substance, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials are also investigating political propaganda materials that were reportedly included in the package.
There has been no official confirmation of the nature of the substance, nor attribution of intent.
The facility has handed the case over to the Office of Special Investigations (OSI).
The incident underscores heightened concerns at high-profile and sensitive military installations, especially given Joint Base Andrews’ role in Presidential and VIP air transport.
