The Senate has confirmed former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase as Chairman Police Service Commission (PSC).

Arase’s nomination was received by the Senate from President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday.

The Senate Committee on Police Affairs thereafter commenced the screening of Arase as PSC Chairman a few hours after receiving a request for his confirmation from the President.

Sixty-six-year-old Arase was born on June 21, 1956. He served as the 18th Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force. He was appointed IGP in 2015 by President Goodluck Jonathan after IGP Suleiman Abba was sacked.

Arase is succeeding Musiliu Smith, another former IGP who resigned last year on health grounds.

Following Smith’s resignation, retired judge, Clara Ogunbiyi, took over as acting chairman of PSC.

Arase is assuming leadership of the PSC at a period the Commission is at loggerheads with the Police Authorities and the IGP over recruitment of new personnel for the Police.
