The much-anticipated Commonwealth University Leaders Conference has been rescheduled and relocated to Lagos, in a strategic move aimed at guaranteeing the safety and full participation of delegates from across the globe.

Originally slated for April in Abuja, the high-level gathering will now hold from May 21 to 22, 2026, with organisers citing prevailing security concerns and broader logistical considerations as key factors behind the decision.

In a statement issued by the Local Organising Committee, the organisers said the relocation followed “extensive consultations” with university stakeholders, participating institutions, and security agencies, all of whom prioritised the safety, comfort, and seamless engagement of attendees.

The statement, signed by Dammy Sanyaolu, Head of Administration of the committee, revealed that the revised arrangements have already received overwhelming endorsement from registered participants.

“We are pleased that the overwhelming majority of institutions that registered earlier have reaffirmed their commitment to participate, and that our international guests have also confirmed their attendance,” Sanyaolu stated, describing the development as a strong vote of confidence in the conference’s vision.

The conference is expected to convene an influential mix of Vice Chancellors, university presidents, policymakers, scholars, and higher education leaders from across the Commonwealth. Discussions will centre on critical issues shaping the future of tertiary education, including governance frameworks, sustainable funding models, innovation ecosystems, and cross-border academic collaboration.

Organisers also noted that the new May date provides a fresh window for institutions that were unable to meet the earlier April registration deadline, potentially expanding participation and deepening the quality of discourse.

“This is an opportunity for institutions that could not complete arrangements for the earlier date to now join what promises to be a landmark gathering of university leaders,” the statement added.

With renewed momentum and growing international interest, the Lagos edition of the conference is now poised to serve as a pivotal platform for forging stronger institutional partnerships and advancing policy conversations that will shape higher education across Commonwealth nations.
