Sea pirates operating along the Calabar–Oron waterways abducted 14 people in a rare but alarming maritime attack before they were rescued by security operatives.

The victims were freed following a joint operation by the Nigeria Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the victims were taken by pirates who have increasingly been linked to criminal activities along coastal and riverine corridors in southern Nigeria.

Security operatives, acting on credible intelligence, intensified surveillance across key locations and carried out coordinated operations in identified hotspots.

The efforts led to the safe rescue of all 14 victims without injury.

The victims are currently receiving medical attention and undergoing debriefing before being reunited with their families.

Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, praised the operation, describing it as a clear example of what can be achieved through strong collaboration between security agencies.

He said the success of the mission highlights the importance of intelligence-driven policing, especially in tackling emerging threats such as piracy along inland waterways.

The police said efforts are ongoing to track down those behind the abduction and bring them to justice, assuring the public that security agencies remain committed to safeguarding lives across both land and water routes.
