Saudi Arabian authorities have executed a Nigerian, Idris Ibrahim, after he was convicted of smuggling cocaine into the Kingdom.
Ibrahim was executed in the Madinah region on August 24, according to the Saudi Ministry of Interior.
The ministry said security authorities arrested him over the smuggling of cocaine and that investigations resulted in formal charges before he was taken before a competent court.
The court found Ibrahim guilty and sentenced him to death under ta’zir, a discretionary punishment under Saudi law.
The ruling was upheld on appeal and by the Supreme Court before a royal order was issued for the sentence to be carried out, the ministry said.
The execution came as Saudi Arabia continues to impose the death penalty extensively in drug-related cases, including against foreign nationals.
Amnesty International reported in June that Saudi Arabia had carried out 96 executions between January 1 and June 22, 2026, with 61 linked to drug-related offences. Of those executed for drug offences, 39 were foreign nationals.
The organisation said Saudi Arabia recorded at least 356 executions in 2025, the highest annual figure it has documented for the country. Drug-related offences accounted for 240 of those executions, with foreign nationals making up 188 of the total.
Human Rights Watch also reported that Saudi Arabia’s 2025 execution figures were driven largely by people convicted of non-lethal drug offences, with 240 executions recorded for such offences, including 188 foreign nationals.
The Saudi Ministry of Interior, however, maintains that the death penalty is necessary to combat drug trafficking and protect citizens and residents from the effects of narcotics.
Following Ibrahim’s execution, it warned that people involved in drug smuggling and trafficking would face severe legal penalties.
The ministry did not disclose the quantity of cocaine involved in Ibrahim’s case or provide details about when or where he was arrested.

I don’t know exactly what’s wrong with our Nigeria people,they know this people don’t joke with their laws.
And they’ve heard and see some videos of those caught with drugs in Saudi Arabia . Once the caught you with drugs they will execute the person.
