In what appears like a blow below the belt, Lagos Stae governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, today attacked the personality of his rival in the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket that must be won on October 1.
Ambode threw caution to the wind as he told reporters at a Press Conference today that Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu who will slug it out with him tomorrow is an American felon and a man not mentally fit for the job he is applying for.
According to Ambode, Sanwo-Olu was once arrested in the United States for spending fake dollars in a nightclub.
He also alleged that Sanwo-Olu, who is being backed by APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and some special interests in the state, has psychiatric issues and is not well.
Insisting that Sanwo-Olu is not a fit and proper candidate for the position of Lagos governor, Ambode said that the aspirant was once treated at the Gbagada General Hospital.
“He has been arrested for spending fake US dollars in an American nightclub. He lacks competency and health-wise, he has gone through mental rehabilitation,” he said.
The governor disclosed that Sanwo-Olu served time in US prisons in connection with a string of counterfeit bill-passing incidents in the country.
He said he was ready for a free and fair primary election, as he warned party thugs to keep away from the wards.
He added that he would ensure security at all the wards.
At the press conference in Lagos, the governor said he was under no illusion about the battle ahead in the APC primary election for governor, but he added: ”We shall overcome.”
