TORONTO — Toronto came alive with colour, culture and royalty at the weekend as His Royal Majesty, Oba Joseph Adewole, the Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, and his wife, Olori Yemisi Matilda Adewole, celebrated the marriage of their daughter, Princess Oyinkansola, to Adewale Rasheed, popularly known as King Choco, of the Alade Rasheed family of Abeokuta.
Family members, friends and well-wishers travelled from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States and different provinces across Canada for the elaborate two-day celebration.
The mothers of the couple, Olori Yemisi Matilda Adewole and Mrs Olayide Adebiyi, were joined by an impressive gathering of family members, friends and associates who came from different parts of the world to share in the joyous occasion.
The festivities began with a colourful traditional engagement at the Viceroy Banquet Hall in Vaughan, where guests witnessed a rich display of Yoruba culture, tradition and family bonding.
Speaking on the occasion, Oba Adewole described his daughter as “God-fearing, brilliant, focused and substantial,” saying that godliness and kindness remained among her defining attributes.
The Ajero, who could not conceal his joy, said watching Oyinkansola grow into an accomplished woman and seeing her begin a new chapter of her life brought him immense fulfilment.
“I feel so happy. I feel fulfilled. I thank God for this milestone in Oyinkansola’s life. She has always been a good girl, a darling daughter,” the monarch said.
“It is always a thing of joy to raise your daughter, see her grow into a good woman, succeed in life, do well and make the family happy.
“This is great progress for me as a father and for the entire family. There is no greater joy than to hand her over to her heartthrob so they can begin building their own family.
“We consider today the day the Lord has made, and we are rejoicing in it.”
The bride’s mother, Olori Yemisi Adewole, was equally emotional as she reflected on her daughter’s journey.
She described Oyinkansola as “a good child who lives with consideration for others,” adding that witnessing her wedding made her “the happiest woman on earth.”
Mrs Dolly Olatunji, who flew in from London, United Kingdom, also spoke glowingly about the bride, who had lived with her in London for a considerable period.
Olatunji described Oyinkansola as dedicated, talented, humble and sophisticated, saying the bride occupied a special place in her heart.
For the groom, Adewale, the celebration was an opportunity to publicly affirm his devotion to his bride.
He described Princess Oyinkansola as “the best thing that ever happened to me” and “the password to my life,” pledging to love, cherish and devote himself to her throughout their lives together.
Oyinkansola reciprocated the affection, describing Adewale as “an answered prayer” and the man she had asked God for. She pledged her unwavering love and commitment to him.
The couple’s love story began four years ago at a friend’s wedding. A photograph of Oyinkansola posted on Snapchat by a mutual friend caught Adewale’s attention, prompting him to ask, “Who’s that?”
That simple question opened a conversation, blossomed into a relationship and ultimately led the couple to the altar.
The wedding service was coordinated by Pastor Oladimeji Faulkner, while Bishop Cornelius Adagbada, in his sermon, counselled the newlyweds to make God the foundation and enduring pillar of their home.
The celebrations climaxed with a grand reception at the Woodbine Banquet Hall, where guests joined the families in celebrating the newlyweds.
Among the prominent royal fathers associated with the celebration were the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and HRM Oba Adekunle Oyeyemi, adding a distinct royal flourish to the memorable Toronto wedding.
