The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected robbers who allegedly used toy guns to intimidate motorists and dispossess them of their valuables in Ibadan.
Police said the suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence from residents about criminal activities along the Elebu-Oja area off Alao-Akala Expressway.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, operatives of the Anti-Counterfeiting and Fraud Unit mounted a surveillance patrol in the area after receiving the tip-off.
During the operation, officers arrested two suspects identified as Elijah Teejay, 21, and Ottu Emmanuel, 33.
A search conducted on them led to the recovery of two toy pistols and some illicit drugs, items the police said had been used to threaten unsuspecting victims.
The discovery revealed that the suspects allegedly relied on imitation firearms to scare motorists into surrendering their belongings.
Police said the swift operation prevented further attacks on residents and road users along the axis.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to several robberies in the area and other locations within and outside Oyo State, indicating that they may have been operating across state lines.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Femi Haruna, has directed that the suspects be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The command also commended members of the public whose information led to the arrests.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
Authorities assured that efforts to rid the state of criminal elements would continue.
