Billionaire entrepreneur, Richard Branson, has shared the fascinating backstory behind how Janet Jackson signed with Virgin Records in what became one of the most groundbreaking music deals of the 1990s.
Marking the anniversary of Jackson’s iconic 1993 album Janet, Branson took to social media to reflect on the high-stakes negotiations that brought the global superstar to Virgin at the peak of her fame.
According to Branson, nearly every major label wanted Jackson’s signature at the time, forcing Virgin to think beyond conventional music industry tactics. One memorable move involved convincing the pop icon to join him on a hot air balloon ride, an experience he said helped “sweeten the deal.”

But the real gamble came when Virgin decided to shatter industry norms.
Branson revealed that after discussions with Virgin executives Simon Draper and Ken Berry, the company offered Jackson what was then the largest recording contract ever offered to a singer. In another unprecedented move, Virgin reportedly signed her for just one album instead of locking her into a lengthy multi-album contract.
“At the time, it was a rare exception,” Branson admitted, noting that he usually preferred cautious business decisions that minimized financial risk.
The gamble, however, paid off spectacularly.
Jackson’s Janet album became a global phenomenon, selling more than 20 million copies worldwide and cementing her status as one of the biggest entertainers of her generation. The partnership between Jackson and Virgin Records lasted an impressive 17 years, during which she released five successful albums under the label.

Released in May 1993, Janet marked a turning point in Jackson’s career, showcasing a more mature artistic direction and producing hit singles that dominated charts worldwide. The album remains one of the defining pop and R&B records of the decade.
Branson’s revelation has since sparked excitement among music fans online, offering a rare glimpse into the fierce competition and bold decision-making that shaped one of the music industry’s most iconic partnerships.
