Residents of Tangaza and Tambuwal Local Government Areas of Sokoto State have reported separate incidents they described as drone attacks, claiming the strikes were carried out by the United States military.

Checks by Newsmakerslive.org indicate that one of the incidents occurred in Jabo District of Tambuwal Local Government Area, a community that residents say has not previously been directly affected by violent attacks linked to banditry or armed groups.

Eyewitnesses said the incident caused panic in the area.

One resident explained that they were seated outdoors when they noticed an object resembling a small aircraft approaching the community moments before an explosion was heard.

According to residents, the object created a large crater and sparked a fire that was still burning some time later.

They said the impact did not hit any residential buildings and no injuries or deaths were recorded.

Residents also claimed to have recovered metal fragments believed to be from the object and said they intended to hand them over to local authorities for examination.

In Tangaza Local Government Area, residents similarly confirmed strikes on locations believed to be hideouts of the Lakurawa group, a violent faction that has been linked by local communities and security sources to cross-border criminal activity in north-western Nigeria.

A local government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the strikes occurred between about 10pm and midnight in Warriya and Alkasim villages.

The official said the full impact of the incidents had not yet been determined, including whether there were any casualties, adding that security operatives were expected to visit the affected areas to verify what happened.

Sokoto State, particularly its eastern and border communities, has endured more than a decade of banditry, cattle rustling and attacks on rural settlements.

The federal government has, in recent years, intensified military operations in the wider North West region, including the use of air power by the Nigerian Air Force against armed groups.

However, there has been no official confirmation that foreign military assets are involved in such operations within the state.

Multiple sources, including local authorities, said no airstrikes were recorded in the eastern part of Sokoto State during the period in question, despite the area’s long history of insecurity.

Efforts to obtain official comments from the Sokoto State Police Command were unsuccessful.
