Unconfirmed reports have surfaced suggesting that former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, has been arrested by security operatives over alleged links to a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to some online media outlets, including 9News Nigeria, Sylva was reportedly captured after an intensive security operation.
The reports, which have not been independently verified, claim that the Department of State Security (DSS) had launched a manhunt for him following intelligence linking him to individuals allegedly involved in the purported plot.
However, no official statement has been issued by the DSS, the Nigerian Army or the Presidency confirming the arrest. Attempts to reach Sylva or his representatives have also been unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Earlier this week, multiple sources confirmed that Sylva’s Abuja residence was raided by military operatives as part of a wider investigation into the alleged coup attempt.
The former governor, who is currently outside the country, has since denied any involvement, insisting he is a law-abiding citizen with no political motive against the Tinubu government.
In a brief statement quoted by Premium Times, Sylva said he was “shocked” by reports linking him to a coup, describing the claims as “baseless and politically motivated”. He added that he had travelled abroad for medical reasons when his home was searched.
As of now, the details remain sketchy and unconfirmed. Security officials have yet to make any public disclosure regarding the alleged arrest or the progress of their investigation.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more verified information becomes available.
