The academic community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned scholar and historian, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba, who passed away at the age of 92.
The death of the respected intellectual was announced on Wednesday by the Yusufu Bala Usman Institute, where he served as Chairman.
In a statement titled, “Notice of Passing of our Chairman, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba,” signed by the institute’s Director, Norma Perchonock, the institute disclosed that Osoba died peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday at his residence in Ijebu Ode.
The statement described the late Osoba as a rare intellectual whose life was devoted to scholarship, teaching and the struggle against exploitation and neo-colonial structures in Nigeria.
“He was a rare scholar whose whole life was dedicated to teaching and research that was designed to educate his students, colleagues and the general public about the nature of the capitalist system and the structures of neo-colonialism that dominate the Nigerian state,” the institute stated.
According to the institute, Osoba’s groundbreaking work in economic history helped expose the structural challenges hindering Nigeria’s development, while his writings influenced generations of academics, activists and policymakers.
The late scholar, who hailed from Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, was also celebrated for his extensive contributions to public discourse through books, research papers, newspaper articles and opinion columns.
One of his most notable contributions, according to the statement, was co-authoring The Minority Report and Draft Constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1976 alongside his close associate and renowned historian, Yusufu Bala Usman.
The institute noted that the publication significantly shaped national debates on constitutional development and governance in Nigeria.
“Segun is gone but he has left an enduring legacy and a shining example for patriotic Nigerians to emulate,” the statement added.
Funeral arrangements, the institute said, would be announced later by the family.
