A Reform UK election candidate who was previously barred from standing over alleged racist social media posts has claimed that online scammers traced to Africa were responsible for the offensive messages.

Graham Holland was initially blocked by Reform UK after concerns emerged about what the party described as “inappropriate social media” activity linked to his X account.

However, the party later reversed its decision after Holland reportedly presented what Reform UK called “new evidence”, allowing him to remain a candidate.

According to reports published by the Daily Mirror, Holland has now alleged that his account was compromised by scammers operating from Africa, specifically claiming that “Nigerian scammers” were behind the racist posts that triggered the controversy.

While no public evidence has yet been released linking the offensive posts directly to Nigerian cybercriminals, the country has long battled an international reputation problem tied to internet fraud, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo”.

The controversy surrounding Holland comes amid increasing scrutiny of political candidates’ online histories ahead of elections in Britain, where parties have become more sensitive to accusations of racism, extremism and misinformation spread through social media platforms.

Reform UK has not publicly disclosed the full details of the evidence presented by Holland but confirmed that he was reinstated after internal review of the material he supplied.
