A 40-year-old man has reportedly been set free by the police after allegedly raping his seven-year-old niece at an undisclosed location on Monday.

Checks by NewsmakersNG suggested that the incident might have happened at Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom State.

According to a Twitter user, who identified herself as Ree_Rie, the victim died from excessive loss of blood five minutes after she was brought to the hospital where she works by her distruaght parents.

She said she took an interest in the matter and later learnt that the suspect who was initially arrested by the police on Monday night was released yesterday, same day the victim was buried, after allegedly paying a bribe of N10,000.

She added that the unidentified suspect is an influential person, who would most probably escape justice.

She however declined to give any details of the location of the incident or disclose the suspect’s identity due to the legal implications it might have for her and her employers.

Using the handle, @A_Gyal, she had tweeted: “At work yesterday. A 7yr old girl was rushed into the emergency. She has been bleeding from her vagina for the past 24hrs due to a 40 yr old uncle who raped her. Patient died 5mins on reaching the hospital. I saw a father cry like a baby, it was so heartbreaking.

“Followed up the case today, father arrested uncle last night, uncle paid bail of 10,000 naira and was released today. Oh and uncle is an ‘influential somebody’ in this town. Child was buried today. Uncle probably scouting for next victim.”

When she was prodded by some Twitter user for more details that would ensure that the victim gets justice, she replied: “Legal backing doesn’t allow me to disclose that information.. Believe i want nothing less.”
