Quit Notice: Nigerian Embassy in S/A Adopts New Approach

Nigeria`s Consul General in South Africa, Mr Godwin Adama, says the mission is partnering with the Nigerian Union, security agencies and communities to discourage Nigerians from committing crime in that country.

Adama told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Johannesburg on Thursday that the involvement of some Nigerians in crime was a major challenge for the mission.

He said that the quit notice given to some Nigerians in a South African community was due to their alleged involvement in crimes.

“A major challenge we are facing in carrying out our consular responsibility is the issue of some Nigerians committing crimes.

“In Hendrila community in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, the mission, in conjunction with the executive of Nigerian Union, met with the Police and community leaders on Nigerians resident there.

“They told us that they gave quit notice to Nigerians in their community because of their involvement in drug peddling.

“They alleged that some Nigerians in their community engaged in crime because the drugs are passed to the youths,’’ Adama said.

The Consul-General said that the mission, in response to this, held a meeting with Nigerians in Hendrila.

“We told our people to expose those who are involved because the community will trust and live with them peacefully.’’

He said that the mission was also working with the union, police and community leaders to ensure that these social vices were stopped.

“We want to assure the South African authority that we do not support these vices as a government and as Nigerians.

“We are ready to collaborate with them to ensure that they are stopped,’’ Adama said.
