A senior Russian military officer has been killed in a car bomb explosion in Moscow, in what investigators describe as a targeted assassination that has intensified security concerns inside Russia amid the war in Ukraine.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior officer within the General Staff, died after an explosive device planted under his vehicle detonated in the early hours on Monday in a residential area of the capital.

The blast destroyed the car and caused severe injuries to Sarvarov, who later died in hospital, according to investigators.

Authorities said a criminal case had been opened on charges of murder and the illegal handling of explosives.

Forensic teams were deployed to the scene, while surveillance footage from nearby buildings was being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Russian officials have not publicly identified suspects but said all possible motives were being examined.

While no group has claimed responsibility, Russian investigators have suggested the killing may be linked to the conflict in Ukraine, pointing to previous attacks on senior military figures that Moscow has blamed on Ukrainian intelligence services.

Kyiv has not commented on the incident and has made no claim of involvement.

Sarvarov was regarded as a seasoned officer with decades of service, having held senior operational and training roles within the Russian armed forces.

Russian media reported that he had been involved in planning and oversight functions connected to Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine, making him a high-profile figure within the defence establishment.

The bombing is the latest in a series of attacks targeting senior Russian military officials on Russian soil.

In recent months, several high-ranking officers have been killed or injured in explosions in Moscow and its outskirts, incidents that have highlighted apparent vulnerabilities in Russia’s internal security and unsettled the political and military elite.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the killing.

Senior officials condemned the attack and warned that those responsible would be found and punished, with some commentators close to the government calling for tougher counter-intelligence measures and retaliation against perceived external threats.

Analysts say the assassination is likely to deepen tensions between Russia and Ukraine at a time when fighting continues along multiple fronts and diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled.

High-profile attacks inside Moscow are seen as particularly sensitive, striking at the heart of Russian power and challenging the image of control projected by the authorities.
