Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that he and China’s Xi Jinping discussed organ transplants and longevity during a conversation that was inadvertently picked up by a live microphone at Beijing’s military parade today.
Speaking later at a televised press conference in China, Putin said the two leaders had talked about modern medical science and the possibility of extending life expectancy.
“Modern means and methods of improving health, even various surgical [operations] involving organ replacement, allow humanity to hope that life expectancy will increase significantly,” Putin told reporters.
His remarks provided context to the brief exchange that had been broadcast earlier as he and Xi made their way to the viewing stand.
In that hot mic clip, Putin was heard through an interpreter saying biotechnology could enable people to be made “younger and younger” through continuous organ transplantation, while Xi remarked that some experts predict humans may live to 150 years.
The revelation quickly spread across global media, drawing attention not only for its unusual subject matter but also for the setting: a show of China’s military power attended by Xi, Putin, and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.
