A police officer celebrated for his community policing initiatives in Lekki-Ajah area of Lagos was yesterday injured during the #EndSARS protest in Lekki.

NewsmakersNG learnt that a protester crushed the leg of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gbolahan Olugbemi with his car while he was monitoring their activities on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway.

NewsmakersNG also learnt that Olugbemi, who is the Area J Commander at Lekki-Ajah, was rushed to a hospital in Ajah for treatment.

Nigerians protesting against Police brutality and extortion blocked the highway at Lekki and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for hours yesterday as the protests entered its 8th day despite the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector General of Police and assurances from President Muhammadu Buhari that he would grant the requests of the people.

Lagos State police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, said that the protester was driving recklessly when he ran over ACP Olugbemi.

“The Area Commander was personally on the ground to monitor and provide security for the protesters while the protester wilfully drove his car, hit him and ran over him. He is receiving treatment at a hospital in Ajah area of Lagos State,” he said.

Olugbemi had received awards and commendations for spearheading the Community Policing project at the Lekki-Ajah area of Lagos.
