Princess Fadekemi Folasade Alabi-Mbah has emerged as the Regent of Ilawe-Ekiti following the death of the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, Afuntade I.

Her appointment comes days after the revered monarch’s passing was formally announced by the Alawe-in-Council, bringing to an end a reign that lasted about 14 years.

Oba Alabi was widely regarded as a traditional ruler who championed peace, education and community development during his time on the throne.

Princess Alabi-Mbah is expected to oversee traditional affairs and serve as custodian of the throne pending the emergence and installation of a substantive Alawe in accordance with the customs of the town and the relevant laws governing traditional institutions in Ekiti State.

The late monarch, who ascended the throne in 2012, played prominent roles within the state’s traditional institution and previously served as Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers.

He was also credited with supporting key developmental initiatives in Ilawe-Ekiti, including efforts that contributed to the establishment of the Federal College of Education in the community.

His death has continued to attract tributes from residents, traditional chiefs and public figures across Ekiti State, many of whom have described his reign as one marked by dignity, unity and commitment to the progress of Ilawe-Ekiti.

The appointment of female regents following the death of monarchs is an established practice in several Ekiti communities, where regents temporarily occupy royal stools until the selection and installation of substantive kings are concluded.
