President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and named Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Tunji Disu as his successor, a presidency source confirmed to NewsmakersNG today.

According to multiple authoritative sources within the Presidency and security establishment, Mr. Egbetokun was directed to step down during a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. The directive followed consultations at the highest levels of government, with preparations now underway for a formal handover ceremony.

Two months to his retirement, AIG Tunji Disu, a senior officer with a distinguished record in tactical and strategic policing, has been confirmed to take over as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police, pending the required Senate confirmation. Disu’s appointment is understood to be effective immediately as transition plans are finalised.

Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023 by President Tinubu, with his substantive appointment later ratified by the Nigeria Police Council. His tenure was extended beyond the usual retirement age after a change in the Police Act allowed an IGP to serve a single four-year term regardless of age.

The leadership change marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s policing hierarchy as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
