Three policemen have been arrested in Lagos over alleged extortion.
Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, in a statement on Friday said the culprits were nabbed by policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police x-squad.
He said the policemen, whose identities he kept secret, were caught extorting motorists in Surulere area on Friday.
The commissioner of police (CP) in the state, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, has however directed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the affected area should be queried over the conduct of the policemen.
The DPO, who was accused of poor supervision, would also be reported to the police hierarchy for further disciplinary action, Famous-Cole disclosed.
He said the CP had also directed that only authorised personnel such as Heads of Departments, DPOs and Area Commanders should henceforth sign a detention order.
According to Famous-Cole, the CP said under no circumstances should any other person aside those designated should sign a detention order.
Edgal further stated that any area command or division where any policeman is found guilty of “an unworthy or shameful act”, the concerned area commander or DPO would be held liable.
The CP also vowed that the era of unnecessary detention of citizens in the state was gone, Famous-Cole added.
