The Nigeria Police Force has intensified its war against gunrunning and violent crime, announcing a wave of arrests and major recoveries that underscore its determination to safeguard national security.
In a briefing at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID–IRT) base in Guzape, Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed that operatives had recovered 360 prohibited firearms, 5,952 rounds of live ammunition, and arrested 5,936 suspects linked to various offences ranging from armed robbery and kidnapping to cultism and sexual-related crimes.
Among the breakthroughs was the arrest of Jane Anodua, a suspected child trafficker reported by the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs. Acting swiftly, IRT operatives tracked and arrested her in Rivers State, rescuing two 10-year-old girls. Further interrogation led to the rescue of two more children trafficked from Plateau to Imo State, all of whom have now been reunited with their families.
In another operation, detectives intercepted Tanfa Binbol on July 13, 2025, based on intelligence reports. The suspected gunrunner, believed to be operating between Taraba and Plateau States, was found in possession of three AK-47 rifles, five pistols, and a pump-action rifle.
Similarly, on July 27, operatives nabbed Jerauji Ibrahim in Adamawa State. He confessed to possessing two AK-47 rifles, which were recovered alongside magazines and 19 rounds of live ammunition.
Additional raids yielded an arsenal of AK-47 rifles, a G-3 rifle, a submachine gun, revolvers, and locally fabricated weapons from criminal hideouts across the country.
The arrests cut across a wide range of offences:
- 715 armed robbery suspects
- 306 kidnappers
- 533 homicide suspects
- 149 arrested for unlawful possession of firearms
- 371 suspects for sexual-related offences
- 590 cultists
- 3,272 others for various crimes
According to DCP Adejobi, these successes highlight the coordinated intelligence-led policing efforts spearheaded by IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, who has prioritized clamping down on organised crime and ensuring citizens live without fear.
“The Nigeria Police Force, under the esteemed leadership of the Inspector-General, remains unwavering in its core mandate of protecting lives and property. These achievements reflect our commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates and restoring peace across the country,” Adejobi stated.
The IGP urged Nigerians to continue collaborating with law enforcement by providing credible information, stressing that the battle against gunrunning, child trafficking, and violent crime is a shared responsibility.
