Obasa tackles Meranda.

Security details for former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, 2025, have been restored, while those assigned to the current Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.

Sources indicate that Obasa is set to reclaim his position, following high-level interventions by top figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly after her unanimous election following his impeachment. However, despite not officially resigning, her tenure now appears to be coming to an abrupt end.

Over the weekend, influential APC leaders—including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and lawmakers—held a crucial meeting. During the discussions, it was reportedly concluded that Obasa’s removal was illegal and that the Assembly should reinstate him.

While the House is yet to reconvene for an official resolution, all indications point to Obasa’s imminent return.

In a swift development, police officers and security personnel assigned to Speaker Meranda and the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Ganzallo Victor, Senior Special Assistant to Meranda on Media, has raised concerns over the withdrawal, warning that both the Speaker and the Assembly are now vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Obasa was seen at the Assembly complex on Thursday, arriving at midday and heading straight to the Speaker’s office, further fueling speculation about his reinstatement.
