Police officers at the Zone 2 Headquarters in Lagos have rejected a bribe of N174 million from a 28-year-old internet fraudster, Patrick Akpoguma, implicated in a series of cybercrimes, including romance scams, identity theft, cryptocurrency fraud, and ritualistic practices.
Speaking at a press briefing, Akpoguma admitted to his crimes and confessed to offering the bribe in a failed attempt to evade justice. He had proposed $100,000 (about N174 million) to secure his release.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade disclosed that the investigation began on November 7, 2024, following complaints from residents of Chevron Drive, Lekki, where the suspect lived.
“Patrick Akpoguma admitted to various romance scams, impersonating prominent figures like U.S. Army officer Colonel Matt Herbert and cryptocurrency expert Adam Taggart,” said AIG Fayoade.
Akpoguma allegedly created fake social media profiles and used a $11,200 silicone mask to impersonate victims convincingly. His schemes defrauded people of millions, which he funneled into Bitcoin transactions and luxury acquisitions, including properties in Lagos and Edo State and a GLE Benz valued at N100 million.
Despite the suspect’s bribe attempt, detectives from the Raider Team documented the money as evidence and continued their investigation without compromise.
“The Nigeria Police remain committed to justice and will not tolerate any form of corruption,” AIG Fayoade said.
During his confession, Akpoguma expressed regret, praising the professionalism of the police.
“This is my first bad encounter with the law in three years of fraud. I commend the Nigeria Police for their transparency and urge others to pursue legitimate means of earning a living,” he said.
The investigation has been concluded, and Akpoguma will soon face multiple charges for his cybercrimes in court.
