Police Authorities have set up a special panel to investigate comments allegedly made by Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, during the state’s re-run elections.
The panel will also investigate 70 incidents mentioned by the Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmud Yakub, during the elections.
According to a statement issued today by police spokesman, DCP Don Awunah, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, set up the panel to investigate and analyse an alleged audio comments by Wike on the legislative re-run elections in Rivers.
The audio report was sent out by an online medium, Sahara Reporters, claiming that the voice was that of Wike.
The panel headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, has 30 days to submit its report which will be made public.
Idris enjoined the Rivers government and INEC to avail the panel with facts at their disposal to achieve a comprehensive and conclusive investigation.
He said: “The election observers, civil society groups, Human Rights watchers and other stakeholders are equally called upon to assist the team with valuable information they may have.”
