Some management staff of Nigerian Breweries Plc have been invited by the police for questioning, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, over a petition by a former supplier with the company.

Nigerian Breweries says in a statement posted on the website of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, on Tuesday, that the petitioner is a former fuel supplier with the company.

Details of the allegations are still scanty, but it is understood that lawyers for the petitioner, TMDK Oil Traders Limited, had petitioned the minister of justice and attorney-general to start the probe after the company’s three-year contract to provide fuel to the brewer lapsed in September.

The statement by Nigerian Breweries says: “Recently, some managers in Nigerian Breweries have been asked to report to the force headquarters for questioning.

“It appears that the petition is targeted at persons connected to Nigerian Breweries, including the wife of our managing director.”

The statement further explained that while TMDK complained of ‘bias’ when it bid for a new contract, Nigerian Breweries’ auditors concluded otherwise after an internal investigation.

It added that the company was cooperating with police.

Nigerian Breweries’ shares fell 1.4 percent, the most since January 3, to N142.5, in Lagos, on Tuesday.
