The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, as protests were reported in parts of the state over the incident.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had approved the recommendations of the Force Disciplinary Committee, which found the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, culpable of gross misconduct and unlawful use of firearms.

According to the police, the officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from Delta State Command and redeployed to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.

The committee found that Usman violated Force Order 237, which regulates the use of firearms by police personnel, describing his actions as unlawful and unprofessional.

The panel subsequently recommended his dismissal alongside other officers implicated in the shooting.

The police said the recommendation has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification, after which the affected officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution.

The development comes amid heightened public outrage in Delta State, where residents staged protests on Tuesday in Effurun and nearby Warri, demanding justice for the deceased.

Videos circulating on social media show demonstrators blocking roads and calling for accountability.

Civil society organisations and community leaders have also condemned the incident, describing it as an extrajudicial killing and calling for a transparent prosecution process.

The police reiterated a zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power, stating that no officer has the right to take life outside the law.

The Inspector-General extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued in a manner that reinforces public confidence.
