A police officer was forced to pay for a damaged bus tyre after luxury bus drivers blocked a section of the Lagos–Benin Expressway in Ore, Ondo State, on Tuesday morning in protest over an alleged act of extortion.

According to multiple posts on X, the incident began when a police officer reportedly shot the tyre of a luxury bus after the driver refused to pay a bribe at a checkpoint along the busy highway, an area known for frequent security stops.

In reaction, fellow luxury bus drivers mobilised and used their vehicles to barricade the expressway, effectively grounding traffic and surrounding the police patrol vehicle.

The drivers demanded that the officer personally pay for a replacement tyre before the road could be reopened.

Eyewitness accounts on social media stated that the standoff lasted for several hours and caused significant disruption to movement along the corridor, which serves as a major link between the South West and South South regions.

The situation was eventually resolved after the officer reportedly paid about N150,000 for a new tyre to replace the damaged one.

Only after payment was made did the protesting drivers dismantle the blockade and allow traffic to resume.

The protest has renewed public attention on allegations of roadside extortion by security operatives and the growing frustration among commercial drivers who ply federal highways daily.

As of the time of filing this report, the police authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
