Two suspected robbers were arrested by the police while robbing motorists trapped in the massive gridlock caused by a diesel tanker that fell on the Otedola bridge, at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, yesterday evening.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the suspects were apprehended by men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) who were on patrol in the area.
Mobile phones belonging to some of their victims were reportedly recovered from them.
Brake failure was reported to have caused the fully-loaded tanker to overturn and spill its contents on the road.
Emergency workers however responded swiftly to prevent a fire outbreak.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the tanker was evacuated at 9.40pm, about five hours after the incident occurred.
Thousands of motorists and commuters were stranded on the route for as long as the gridlock caused by the accident lasted.
